Associated with obesity, raised BP, high fasting plasma glucose, high serum triglycerides, and low HDL, with risk of cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Can be caused by the bacteria Chlamydia pneumoniae and Helicobacter pylori, as well as the viruses Cytomegalovirus and Herpes simplex virus 1.
